After nearly a decade long manhunt Osama bin Laden, the mastermind behind the 9/11 attacks is dead; killed by American actions.
It was reported late Sunday night, May 1, that Osama Bin Laden was killed by US forces. Details have not yet confirmed as to how Osama was killed, but President Obama addressed the entire nation that US forces killed Bin Laden in Pakistan.
Osama bin Mohammed bin Awad bin Laden (March 10, 1957 – May 1st, 2011) was a the son of a wealthy Saudi family and founder of the jihadist organization al-Qaeda, known for their attacks on September 11th 2001, which was the costliest attack ever on American soil.
Bin Laden had been able to skirt out of US military forces and their allies by staying offline, avoiding modern technology, such as cell phones and other communication devices that would have given away his location.
For the latter part of the 2000s US intelligence stated that they believed bin Laden was in the remote and tribal region of Waziristan, in northwest Pakistan. However it had also been rumored that bin Laden had been on a kidney dialysis machine, lending credibility to the idea that bin Laden was in an urbanized environment.
After taking office in 2009, President Barack Obama has faced enormous challenges; rising gas prices, an economy in decline, and a decade old war known as the War on Terror which he inherited from the Bush administration. Questions abounded since before he took office as to how tough he would actually be on terrorism. The death of Osama bin Laden may have potentially huge benefits for President Obama who is gearing up for a reelection campaign playing host to a number of issues, among them the War on Terror and the strength of the nation’s security.
Critics of the president say that America’s national security is in danger due to the fact that the economy is in such dire straits. However, the death of bin Laden by American forces could prove a turning point for the Obama administration.
Whether or not onlookers will credit President Obama’s policies with the death of bin Laden remains to be seen.
